Studying abroad in Belize helped me further my knowledge about major issues in agricultural and life sciences. The specific issue I was researching during the trip was agricultural education. I wanted to find out how the farmers were obtaining their information, as well as how consumers were being educated about agriculture.
WHAT'S THE ISSUE
Belize agricultural education compares to Florida agricultural education in that they both have ag education courses offered in high schools. They also have extension programs in common, but after speaking with several citizens, I found that Belize’s program is not very active. I also found that Belize did not have any major campaigns to educate their consumers, whereas the state of Florida does. Some of those campaigns include Fresh From Florida’s television commercials or programs like "Ag in the Classroom". Florida also has substantial resources when it comes to research. Most of the farmers in Belize learned what they know from past generations, or from trial and error. In the states, we have libraries, Departments of Agriculture and 24/7 access to the Internet.
